Our Philosophy

At Markham Montessori School the children learn in a relaxed yet structured environment. The children must be challenged and encouraged in order to grow academically and socially. Time is spent to develop the child's self confidence, independence, respect for others and their property, as well as a sense of responsibility towards the world we live in. The program gives the child the opportunities for enrichment and academic challenge, as each child is encouraged to work at his/her own pace. The goal is to develop the student's full potential, while giving the child a solid foundation for life.

Our School

Markham Montessori School was established in 1993, serving families from Markham, Stouffville, Richmond Hill, Pickering and surrounding areas. Currently the school serves children between 1.5 to 6 years of age. The environment is cozy and inviting. Children feel comfortable and develop in a home away from home. Casa is the word for house in the Italian language. The environment has been carefully prepared to invite the child to want to do for herself/himself. “Help me to do by myself.”

By following the child’s natural progression, Montessori not only optimizes their potentialities but also inspires a lifetime love of learning. Learning takes place in a physically active, social environment, and individual skills, independence and confidence blossom across all areas of development.

As all children have an innate desire to learn, Montessori environments are carefully crafted and prepared to support this tendency. Specially designed materials provide the opportunities to engage in spontaneous and purposeful activities under the guidance of trained adults (teachers/directresses).

About Us

“We discovered that education is not something which the teacher does,

but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being.”
-Maria Montessori

Markham Montessori School is committed to meeting the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of the child. It is our desire that within the framework of the Montessori principles and philosophy, the school shall provide each child the opportunity to develop their potential to the best of their ability; within a safe and affirming environment. With the above in mind, the following goals are an integral part of our community and our curriculum:

  • To provide and maintain a happy, safe and healthy learning environment

  • To encourage and support the full development of each child

  • To provide a setting which nurtures the individual’s self-esteem as an independent learner

  • To extend the child’s awareness of their world and community, and assist in the development of social values

  • To uphold and defend the rights of the individual and universal child

  • To cooperate fully with the parents to achieve these goals

French

Our Casa students learn French through vocabulary enrichments, songs, poetry and conversational French (short sentences).
